The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) is pleased to announce that Christian E. Gausvik Jr., MD, will receive its 2019 Resident Leadership Award.
The OAFP presents the Resident Leadership Award to an individual who has exhibited leadership in the OAFP and shows a dedication to promoting family medicine, practices a high degree of professionalism, and possess immense promise as a family physician.
Dr. Gausvik attended the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine and is currently the chief resident at The Christ Hospital UC Family Medicine Residency in Cincinnati, OH.
“I realized sometime into medical school that the role of a physician is not only working as a clinical scientist and diagnostician, but also as an advocate, a teacher, a leader, and so much more,” said Dr. Gausvik.
In addition to his medical studies, he is involved in numerous academic organizations, volunteers in his community, and serves as a representative and leader in several organizations and committees. He has completed medical research, is published in many academic journals, and has received a number of awards for his achievements.
“Christian is personable, kind, calm, and is already the kind of family doctor that patients rave about to friends, and to whom colleagues refer their best friends and most-loved family members,” said Jeffery Schlaudecker, MD, MEd, associate professor for family medicine at UC.
“He is an outstanding individual whose dedication to patients, families, vulnerable populations, and his community warrants his receiving of this award,” said Hillary Mount, MD.
Dr. Gausvik has served his community over the past eight years by successfully organizing an annual Alzheimer’s Fundraiser benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati. Thus far, he has helped raise over $76,000 for the association while raising awareness of the disease.
“His ability to organize these events while maintaining his residency obligations is staggering. It’s clear from the additional substantial investment of his time and efforts that he has an interest and passion for underserved populations, and the ability of a primary care physician to meet needs in the community,” said Dr. Mount.
He is humbled to work alongside accomplished clinicians and advocates, and is fortunate for the opportunities he has been given. He is reminded by his role models to “not underestimate nor forget the power of your voice in the community as a family physician.”
“I hope to continue to become increasingly more effective at using the power of my voice to give back to the people of Ohio both through clinical and community work,” said Dr. Gausvik.
Dr. Gausvik will be honored during the Academy Awards Dinner on Friday, August 2, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. as a part of the Family Medicine Celebration at The Grand Event Center in Columbus, OH. Registration to attend the dinner is $50 per person. Reservations can be made through the OAFP website or by calling (800) 742.7327.
Also during the awards ceremony, Jeff Bachtel, MD, FAAFP, of Tallmadge, OH, will be presented with the OAFP Family Physician of the Year Award and Ann M. Aring, MD, FAAFP of Columbus, OH, will be presented with the OAFP Family Medicine Educator of the Year Award.
