OVERVIEW:

A significant highlight of our residency program is our robust inpatient training. Time spent on the inpatient service is critical for preparing residents for a future in family medicine.

While many graduates go on to have careers in outpatient primary care, several others have continued on in hospital medicine via the strength of this training alone. We pride ourselves on providing high-quality patient and family centered care for our admitted patients, and the Inpatient Family Medicine Service is well-regarded and well-respected by other health professionals and specialties throughout The Christ Hospital. We are also delighted to foster an excellent learning environment for residents and medical students.

Our team also includes psychiatry residents and medical students!

Hear from some of our wonderful faculty answering common questions about our Inpatient service:

STRUCTURE:

Our inpatient service consists of three teams, Team A, Team B, and Team C.

Team lead Cassie Stanzler (PGY-3), Berenitze Balladares (PGY-1), and acting intern holding down Team A!

  • Team A is composed of a senior resident as the team leader, along with one or more interns, a pharmacist, and the attending physician. There are often one or two medical students contributing to the team as well.

  • Team B typically consists of a second-year resident with an attending physician, which offers opportunities for additional growth and independence.

  • Team C, which is typically managed by an attending physician alone if necessary to accommodate overflow.

Patient and Family-centered Rounding:

996x1326.jpeg.jpg

Our inpatient service strives to provide care that is patient- and family-centered by rounding in patient rooms and using patient-centered language. We believe that highly effective care and communication relies on the formation of partnerships among healthcare providers, patients and their families by ensuring that patient and family preferences, needs, values, and dignity are incorporated in all clinical decisions. Our patient and family-centered rounding model has not only increased patient satisfaction, but has also enhanced resident learning and communication skills.

INPATIENT TEACHING:

Each morning before rounds, members of all teams gather for a resident driven 10-15 minute teaching. In the afternoons, there is an attending lecture, in addition to patient and family centered team rounds. Wellness Friday: In place of pre-rounds teaching, Friday mornings are dedicated to wellness moments, which can range from meditations, to games, and even morning mocktails!

WHO WE CARE FOR:

Dorjee Norbu (PGY-4) preparing for rounds

We admit adult patients whose primary care physicians are family doctors within the Greater Cincinnati region, in addition to those who receive care at our Family Medicine Center or at any of our secondary continuity sites. Our busy, high-volume, medically diverse inpatient service has consistently been considered an invaluable educational experience for our residents. Medical students who rotate with us are often amazed by the complex patient panel that we manage on our inpatient service.

Palliative Medicine

Newly minted grads and palliative fellows lovingly dubbed the “pal gals” Emily Furnish and Rynita Bohler!

The residency has a close relationship with the inpatient palliative care team at Christ Hospital. Multiple attendings from the residency are on the palliative team, which also consists of multiple NPs, social workers and a chaplain. Everyone on the team is happy to answer questions and are great to work with as a resident. In addition, Dr Hartmann from the residency is also the director of the UC/TCH Palliative Care Fellowship. You will have a chance to practice palliative medicine regularly, particularly on our inpatient service, with the ability to lead your own family meetings in conjunction with the palliative team. Our geriatrics month also includes time with the palliative team. Lastly, you can do an elective on palliative care for even more experience!
