Andrea Jaramillo - Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Jaramillo is now one of our Global Health Fellows. Congrats!

My name is Andrea Jaramillo. I was born and raised in Ecuador, and ten years ago, I made the decision to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor by coming to the United States. My dream began in 1994, when my little sister, Dayanne was born with Cerebral Palsy and Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum. Her daily fight inspires me to work toward my goal of giving back to those in need. Having lived in an area where resources were scarce, I have a deep understanding of the impact that a physician can have on a small town. It is my goal to serve as a general practitioner in a rural town in the Midwest. Another dream of mine was to give back to the country that raised me; in 2010, I began to work toward this dream by leading a mission trip back to Ecuador. Today, I have completed seven mission trips with more than eighty volunteers from

the U.S. These trips brought me the greatest gift of all, my future husband, Cole. Together, we plan devote a portion of each year to the service of those in need, both here and abroad.

Emily Levinson - University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine

My commitment to underserved communities began long before my career in medicine. Originally from South Bend, Indiana, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Emory University, before returning to the Midwest after college to do Teach for America. As a teacher working in inner-city St. Louis, I confronted many of the inequities entrenched in the current American educational system. After three years of teaching, I decided to redirect my passion towards underserved medicine. While in medical school at the University of Missouri, I worked extensively in free health clinic, as well as rotated in urban federally qualified health centers, and did an HIV outreach elective in South Africa. I plan to continue actively working with underserved communities and confront the critical inequities that are deep-seated in this country.

I chose TCHUH for residency because of its strong commitment to underserved medicine both locally and globally. I am beyond excited for the opportunity to work closely with other residents who have similar passions/interests. I also chose TCHUH for the full spectrum family medicine training, as my interests within family medicine are vast, including (in addition to underserved medicine) teen pregnancy, prenatal addiction medicine, geriatrics and palliative care, adolescent medicine, and much more. I am excited for the opportunity to have intentional academic training in all aspects of family medicine at TCHUH.

Outside of medicine, I love spending time with my husband and dog, as well as family and good friends. I am a red wine enthusiast! I enjoy reading (favorite genre is historical fiction), playing board games, and yoga. I love to both cook and bake. I enjoy being outside whenever the sun is out.

Elizabeth (Libby) Peters - University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

I grew up in Cincinnati and took a four year trip to Oxford, OH to attend Miami University before returning to the University of Cincinnati for medical school. I’m thrilled to continue my training at TCH/UC Family Medicine Residency, where I’ve found exceptionally competent and genuinely kind residents as well as an incredibly supportive faculty with an unmatched passion for teaching. I’m interested in underserved care, women’s health, and mental health care as well as inpatient medicine and I’m confident that this program will prepare me well for any path in Family Medicine! Outside of medicine, I enjoy restaurant-hopping around the city, trying new group fitness classes, cooking, and exploring new bike trails and parks in the area.

Melissa Saab Vance - Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of MedicineDr. Saab Vance is now one of our Geriatrics Fellows. Congrats!A Portsmouth, Ohio native, I am beyond excited to return to the Buckeye State for my Family Medicine training! My interests include full spectrum family medicine, addiction medicine, health policy, and patient advocacy. As medical students at Marshall University, my partner Alex and I ran a free mobile clinic for patients in the Huntington, WV area. Given our background, we initially found ourselves attracted to UC’s mission to serve the “most vulnerable” both locally and abroad. Upon visiting, we were both blown away by the residents can-do attitude and commitment to meeting the needs of their community. The program also has a very strong health policy curriculum, and advocating for my patients by influencing legislative change is something I am eager to learn more about. Alex and I are truly thrilled to build our home in Cincinnati amongst this group of exemplary co-residents and faculty. In addition to learning how to become the best family doc possible, am most excited to exchange ideas with my peers and innovate new ways to serve the Cincinnati community together.

Sara Maples - University of Cincinnati College of MedicineDr. Maples is now one of our Palliative Medicine Fellows. Congrats!I am a native Cincinnatian (and a proud Westsider) excited to be staying in town for residency! I attended the University of Cincinnati for undergrad and completed a Master’s in Health Administration from Ohio University before returning to UC for medical school. Prior to medical school, I worked at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in clinical research for several years.Being involved in the community and serving those in need has always been important to me. During my time at Children’s I aimed to bridge the gap between vulnerable populations and the healthcare system. Another passion of mine stemming from this effort is diversifying medicine to more closely resemble our patient population. I have continued to stay involved during medical school through community councils, being an active member of the Cincinnati alumni chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and serving as a medical officer in the Ohio Army National Guard. The emphasis on underserved populations and the commitment to address health disparities from the faculty and residents is what attracted me to the TCH/UC program. In the future I hope to practice full spectrum primary care, act as physician advocate for the community, and help with diversifying the medical field within our city.Outside of medicine I love spending time with my family and friends exploring all the hidden gems Cincinnati has to offer.

Alexander (Alex) Vance - Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine

I am a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and a Purdue University alumnus (Boiler Up!). I chose Family Medicine because I wanted to be able to fully address the clinical needs of my community both locally and abroad. I chose TCH/UC because of the stellar training, commitment to community and global health, and the unparalleled staff and residents.

My partner (and co-resident) Melissa and I are graduates of Marshall University School of Medicine. We have a Beagle named “Bubba,” and a passion for any excuse to wander in the wilderness.
