We have a complex prenatal patient panel with many challenging social determinants of health. We care for patients with pre-gestational and gestational HTN,  pre-gestational and gestational DM, obesity, history of preeclampsia, and much more. We perform VBACs with the support of our OB backup providers. When our patients have C-sections, we scrub in to assist the OB provider.

Newborn Care

Postpartum, our Maternity Care service also cares for the newborns who will be continuing their care after hospital discharge at our FMC office, at previous residency graduates offices, or at Crossroads FQHC. In many scenarios, we get to experience the full spectrum family medicine experience of caring for families before, during, and after this very special time for growing families.

Centering Pregnancy

Although our maternity care service not a high volume service, the teaching is excellent, and we receive extensive prenatal care training. Throughout the 3 years residents will also have opportunities to participate in group prenatal care visits, called centering pregnancy. Those who are interested will have an opportunity to take on more of a leadership role and even enroll in centering pregnancy training courses.

For those who are interested in additional training, there is an optional advanced OB track, which provides opportunities for more high volume experiences in your second and third years, as well as a maternity care advisor. Out faculty are all ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) instructor certified and there is opportunity for interested residents to become ALSO instructor certified (see photos of residents and faculty at ALSO instructor course).

Projects and Research

Our maternity faculty and residents are often working together on projects and research. We recently received a grant to train all residents in CBT-i (Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia in pregnancy). We also have many residents and faculty working with Cradle Cincinnati and All Children Thrive on projects to decrease maternal and infant mortality in Cincinnati, including projects to increase smoking cessation during pregnancy and improve breastfeeding support, among others.  Led by our maternity care faculty several residents have participated in the Smoke Free For Me efforts with Cradle Cincinnati and over the last 5 years the city has seen a 19% improvement in reported smoking rates by women in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters!
