Class of 2022

Xavier Douglas- University of Toledo

I have spent most of my life growing up in northeast Ohio. I went to Kent State University for my undergrad where I also played collegiate football. From here I went to Toledo for medical school where I discovered my true passion for family medicine and creating a lasting impact on the community I live in. I am truly excited about the UC/TCH residency because of how much it aligns with my life goals. The mission to serve and influence the underserved truly represents my future practice. So many people have mentored me and made sacrifices allowing me to get to this point in my life. I am truly passionate about paying this forward and being a positive role model in the lives of others going forward. Additionally, the chance to travel internationally to practice medicine during my residency training is invaluable, and I am truly blessed to have this opportunity. I am just a kid from Akron living a dream I never thought was possible.

Christopher Champlin- Wright State SOM

I'm a Cincinnati native happy to be back in town. I went to Notre Dame for undergraduate and Wright State University for medical school.

I chose Family Medicine-Psychiatry because I find it difficult to separate out the two when thinking about patients. I would love to be a primary care physician for people with significant mental illness. As a plus, both specialties value talking to patients and I tend to be a chatty person.

What stuck out to me about the TCH / University of Cincinnati family medicine program are the high standards they keep, both academically and personally. The residents and faculty are exceptionally knowledgable and skilled while also being approachable and down to earth. It felt like/feels like a program where I would become a high quality physician while also making some great friends.

Flo Hsiao- Yale School of Medicine

I grew up in California but moved across the country to attend college at Princeton University where my interest in health inequity first developed through a global health research project on clean water access in rural Kenya. When I moved to New Haven, CT for medical school at Yale, I realized that I did not have to look very far to find evidence of health inequities. For four years, I volunteered with Agape, a church for the homeless, which aimed to meet the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of homeless individuals in New Haven. My experience at Agape had a significant influence on my approach to medicine and convinced me of the need for a more holistic, biopsychosocial view of patient care, which ultimately led me to pursue family medicine as a career.

I chose TCH/UC because of their demonstrated commitment to underserved medicine, full-spectrum training, and amazing faculty who are passionate about medical education. I am so excited to move to the midwest for the first time and call Cincinnati my home as well as work with and be mentored by fantastic residents and faculty who are dedicated to improving the health for the most vulnerable both locally and abroad. Outside of medicine, I love hanging out with my husband and friends, exploring new towns, spending too much time in used bookstores and vinyl shops, eating Asian food, learning about plants, and playing music (piano and clarinet).

Sean Lawson University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

I was born on the West side of Cincinnati, grew up in the area, and am so happy to stay here in Cincy for training at the THC/UC Family Medicine Residency program! I went straight to UC out of high school and have completed my undergraduate degrees, a Master of Public Health, and now medical school while here in Cincinnati. I’ve always loved playing and watching soccer, so I was really excited when we got a team (FC Cincinnati) and have been following them regularly since they were founded. The city of Cincinnati has always been important to me and I’m most excited to finally give back to the city that has given so much to me. My favorite thing about Cincinnati is the personality of each neighborhood. Each has different things to offer, but also different needs. I’m eager to continue to learn about those needs and the public health role that a physician can take while at TCH. I’m interested in underserved medicine, public health initiatives, and have been considering hospital medicine as well.

Andrea Rosado- University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

I grew up on Long Island, New York and studied biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame. Before attending UC for medical school, I completed a year of service with St. Vincent de Paul in Cincinnati and began to learn about the issues surrounding local poverty and health disparities. Throughout medical school, I sought out opportunities to continue learning about and working with our local underserved populations, and felt especially passionate about working with the growing Latino population around the city. I am so excited to join the TCH/UC Family Medicine Residency and train with compassionate physicians who do such important work in underserved care both locally and abroad. Outside of medicine, my interests include hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, and exploring the music and art scene around Cincinnati.

Jordan Seto- University of Washington School of Medicine

I am from the Pacific Northwest, hailing from Anderson Island in Washington State. I went to an all women’s college in Western Massachusetts, Mt. Holyoke. I then returned to Washington to attend the University of Washington School of Medicine.

I have strong interests in working with underserved populations and community organizing. Prior to medical school, I spent a year volunteering in a clinic in Haiti, learning about the racial and historical context of international exploitation in Haiti and the implications on the populations’ health and wellbeing. Through medical school, I become more involved in community organizing as a way to improve population health by centering the voices of the community. This included everything from supporting city-level legislation for youth programs to anti-racism movements in the School of Medicine.

I am excited to be part of the team at THCUC, as the focus on underserved medicine, connection to the community, and strong family medicine training is right up my alley. I couples matched with my wife, who will be starting at the University of Cincinnati OB-GYN residency this fall. We are excited to explore all the parks in Cincinnati while playing Pokémon Go, and learn the best bike routes.

LaToya Smith- University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

My hometown is Belleville, Illinois (a suburb of St. Louis). Prior to medical school at the University of Cincinnati, I attended Washington University in St. Louis and MEDPREP in Carbondale, Illinois. Throughout my life, I have been passionate about serving the people in my community. I chose family medicine because of the opportunity to serve patients of all ages and build relationships through continuity of care. Also, several family medicine physicians exemplify the type of community leader I want to be in the future. I am very grateful to be part of TCH/UC program because the faculty and residents value compassionate care, a supportive work environment, and lifelong learning. In residency, I look forward to learning how to be a full spectrum primary care physician. I am particularly interested in working with medically underserved populations and addressing health disparities locally and abroad. Outside of medicine, I enjoy watching sports, spending time with my family, and traveling to new places.
