Our Family Medicine Center (affectionately known as "the FMC") is the heart of the program. This is the outpatient continuity location where we see patients for the entirety of our residency. Located directly next to the hospital, it is a busy practice which houses all residents and multiple faculty members. We provide true comprehensive outpatient family medicine- and are always expanding the range of services we offer.

The staff

Catherine Lee (PGY-1) and MA Lafrina Napier work in sync in the maternity care clinic!

Our staff in the FMC are resilient, caring, and flexible! We depend on our amazing staff to keep the FMC running. They connect with our patients, help keep us organized and are important teachers of all things Epic, workflow, inbox, and more. Plus, they give the best hugs!

 The Patients

If you ask our residents why they chose this program a common answer will be "the patient population." One of our residency's focuses is care for underserved patients in urban settings and the FMC is an integral part of this mission. The patients you see here are some of the finest teachers we have in residency- you will learn how to incorporate social determinants of health into your everyday practice while also providing exceptional individualized care.

The FMC is always working to improve the patient experience and well as educational opportunities. We were selected as a Comprehensive Primary Care Plus site which means that innovation is our normal. Whether it's seeking the advice of our Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC, see below) on how to make the office more inviting or offering the group visits for pregnancy care we love trying new things. Residents are frequently implementing quality improvement projects within the FMC. In fact, residents have designated time and structured education within the their Team Time to gather and interpret quality metrics and develop strategies to improve patient care and population health. For more information about team time, visit our "Yearly Breakdown" page.

Gender Affirming Care

The Family Medicine Center provides care to LGBTQ+ patients, in coordination and cooperation with leaders at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Stryker (a 2018 graduate) and Dr Bedard-Thomas (a 2020 graduate) both worked tirelessly to fill a need in the community. Dr. Stryker realized early in her training that there were no providers providing trans* care for Medicaid patients in Cincinnati. She sought out appropriate training and started providing that care to our patients. Dr. Bedard-Thomas helped her disseminate that training to the rest of the residents, and now many residents have trans* patients on their panel in the FMC.

Several unique aspects of our LGBTQ+ care distinguish us from other programs. Below are some of the ways we are approaching addressing the needs of our LGBTQ+ community:

  • By training clinic providers to provide high quality, knowledgeable LGBTQ+ specific patient care.

    • We offer HRT training for the residents twice annually so patients can appropriately care for LGBTQ+ patients on their panel.

    • For residents interested in additional training, there are many opportunities to do longitudinal electives with our highly trained faculty who have dedicated a large portion of their practice to providing care for LGBTQ+ patients and are experts in the field, including Dr. Sarah Pickle (UC Faculty) and Dr. Shana Stryker (2018 graduate).

    • Opportunities to gain experience in gender affirming care and HRT are upcoming as the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine prepares to welcome their first class of LGBTQ+ fellows! Learn more about the new LGBTQ+ fellowship: click here

  • By working towards universal training so that all clinic staff are culturally proficient in meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ patients and ensuring that all patients are treated with dignity and respect

LITERACY IN THE FMC

There are many on-going projects to provide books for all of our Well Child Checks and help improve childhood literacy for our patients.

  • We know reading at an early age is IMPORTANT. Language development peaks at 8 months!

  • We learn to use books as a tool during Well Child visits to assess development and show how important reading is.

  • We participate in local initiatives and distribute age appropriate books at all well child checks, postpartum visits, and more!

What is PFAC?

PFAC Meetings in the COVID Era

PFAC Meetings in the COVID Era

  • PFAC is a collaborative partnership among patients, families, caregivers and our FMC leadership to share the patient and family perspective about the health care experience. We look to these advisors to make recommendations for improvements in how our office delivers care.
